On Nov. 8, the trailer for the new Mean Girls movie, set to release on Jan. 12, 2024, brought a great uproar of excitement from fans.
This new movie introduces a new cast starring Reneé Rapp who will play Regina George, Angourie Rice who will play Cady Heron, and Christopher Briney who will play Aaron Samuels. Nevertheless, there will still be some glimpses of original cast members such as Tina Fey and Tim Meadows who played Ms. Norbury and Mr. Duvall.
Despite the common misconceptions, this new movie is not a remake, but an adaptation of the “Mean Girls” Broadway show which was first shown in 2018. Many fans are confused as to how the movie will turn out since the official trailer released by Paramount Pictures does not depict the movie as a musical. Tina Fey, who wrote the script for the 2004 “Mean Girls’’ and the book for the 2017 Broadway show also wrote the script for the new musical movie. Therefore, the overall idea of the new musical movie is likely to stay the same as the original “Mean Girls.” Although the overall concept of the movie will stay the same, there are sure to be many changes like the introduction of many more songs and the change in time setting from 2004 to 2024.
The original Mean Girls movie is a classic that started many trends and features iconic quotes, such as “On Wednesdays we wear pink” and “That’s so fetch,” among others.
With the new movie, fans are eager to see how the two will compare and if the new movie will live up to the hype of the original.
Marley Naniola ’25 said, “I have mixed emotions about the new movie because reboots tend to mess up what isn’t broken, but I will definitely still watch it to see if it can live up to the original.”
