With the new year comes a new wrestling season. Three years ago, the wrestling team was co-ed due to the lack of girls. However, this year, the wrestling team has grown to 15 girls, allowing for an all-female team.
The growth is credited to the fact that, “people are more interested now because we’re no longer worried about catching COVID in this high-contact sport,” said Helena ‘Kai’ Murguz ’25.
It is also due to how Riordan now has many more female students than when the school first went co-ed.
As of Dec. 14, the girls have won two matches against Washington and Lowell High School.
Luna Medina ’24 explained, “So far something that we’ve accomplished is placing 9th out of 50 schools in our most recent tournament, Webber Lawson.”
A lot of tenacity is required to participate in wrestling.
Murguz expressed, “Wrestling is the most intense sport in regards to training, there’s so much you have to train for.”
Along with the intense training comes a silver-lining.
Murguz added,, “The moments that always stand out to me are when watching a teammate’s match and seeing them have a comeback in the third period; everyone is screaming their heads off.
She concluded, “The girls team is special that way, that we are always there to support and scream for each other.”
