As Riordan’s diversity increases, so does its club variety. With an increasing number of Irish students, a new club has emerged: the Irish Heritage Club. The club’s focus is to bring light to the history and background of Irish culture, while also being a space where students feel represented and connected.
Club leader, Ashling Greene ’26 shared, “I want to show Riordan that the Irish were also discriminated against by other countries. Just to name a few, the Anti-Irish Sentiment in the United Kingdom, the Great Famine in 1845-1852, and NINA (No Irish Need Apply). Irish culture is more than just green and leprechauns, there is a history behind it.”
One of the club’s goals is to allow students to dive deeper into Irish heritage as well as share stories about their ancestry.
With the club still being fairly new, Greene hopes to expand the club’s outreach and invites any students to join, even if they aren’t Irish.
She said, “We love everyone in our club and I love teaching new people about Irish culture.”
The Irish Heritage Club strives to encourage students to connect with their Irish heritage and learn about Irish History.
Club Moderator, Shannon Moran shares, “This club is a good opportunity for me to learn more about my Irish roots along with the students. We are also starting a project that is exchanging videos with Ms. Mcdermott’s old students in Ireland, so we are excited to see how that turns out.”
