YouTube Rewind virtually disliked by all
March 29, 2019
YouTube Rewind started in 2010 as a way for YouTube to acknowledge videos that went viral on the platform throughout the year.
Over the years, YouTube Rewind has been growing in production value and features prominent YouTubers, celebrities, events, popular music, and memes. The past few Rewinds haven’t gotten much love, but nothing compares to the backlash YouTube got for Rewind 2018.
The video is supposed to cover events and people who went viral in 2018, but it failed to acknowledge many internet dramas like the Logan Paul vs. KSI fight, the Pewdiepie vs. T Series meme, and huge YouTubers like Pewdiepie, the most subscribed channel on YouTube, were left out.
To give some perspective, some of the YouTubers in the video had as many as 1 million subscribers, which is a lot, but Pewdiepie has a whopping 87.4million subscribers and counting. Many of the YouTubers featured in the video hadn’t even uploaded any new content for months while bigger channels have been uploading daily.
Tomizo Callejas ’20 said, “There were about four people I knew in the entire video.”
Missing out on many trends during the year wasn’t the only reason this rewind failed miserably. YouTube Rewinds are usually lighthearted and seem like a huge party, but halfway through YouTube Rewind 2018,the tone of the video shifts to become extremely political.
This segment got so much harsh criticism for completely ruining the fun environment YouTube Rewinds are supposed to embody. The political segment focused on including many channels from different countries that nobody knew, so people were stumped about why they were even there.
The politics in the video were liberal, but even liberal viewers criticized the placement of their beliefs in a video that doesn’t have anything to do with politics.
“They tried to make it something it’s not supposed to be and they ended up creating this liberal video about changes but missed huge trends in a video about having fun,” stated Callejas.
Since YouTube Rewind was universally considered a terrible video, it amassed an astonishing
number of dislikes, 15 million, ironically making it the most disliked video on YouTube.
The king of most disliked videos used to be the music video “Baby” by Justin Bieber, but Rewind had more. Many viewers removed their dislikes from “Baby” to make it easier for YouTube Rewind 2018 to overtake it. And so, the most disliked video on YouTube is made by YouTube and they only have themselves to blame.
