The 2023-24 school year marks the first time that sailing will be regarded as an official sport at Archbishop Riordan High School. With this new designation, the sailing team is excited to represent Riordan as an official team. “We’re glad to finally be recognized after years of representing Riordan at regattas around the Bay, and California as a whole.” said Sophie Bucker ‘24, captain of the sailing team.
Bucker hopes to start the season off strong and is looking forward to seeing the new coming freshmen to put their skills to the test. “We have just started the season, but we’re hoping for a strong start this weekend at our first regattas this season at Richmond Yacht Club. We have three freshmen this season, so I’m looking forward to seeing them apply all the starting and racing techniques we focus on during practice to actual regattas for the first time.”
Co-captain Eva Bennett ‘25 considers this season to be a “transitional period’ with new freshmen coming in and catching them up to speed. Despite possible growing pains, Bennett believes “Sailing to the best of our ability is always an important part.” When asked how she would describe the team, Bennett said “Growing and improving.”
Sophie Bucker is hopeful for the season and the future of the team with the incoming freshmen. Despite this being their first season, the freshmen sailors are catching on quickly. With this contribution, the team is able to grow and progress. “I’m very excited about growth this season. Although it’s been a few weeks, I’ve seen our freshmen improve a lot, and I’m pretty hopeful for our future as a team”
Riordan’s sailing team has much to look forward to in this 2023 season, with new people coming, a new captain, as well as being the first year it’s recognized as an official sport. Riordan sailing has a future that can only be described as “bright”.
