The San Francisco Giants have officially announced Bob Melvin as their new manager, succeeding previous manager Gabe Kapler, who was fired from his position with three games left in the season.
Melvin is returning to the Bay Area, after already leaving a mark on the team. Having played for the San Francisco Giants from 1986 to 1988, Melvin hit his career high of 11 home runs in 1987. Decades later, Melvin is back to guide his past team to further success.
“There were always times here, I can admit that now, that I was hoping at some point in time I’d come back,” Melvin told ESPN.
Previously, Melvin had managed the San Diego Padres for two seasons before being allowed to interview for the Giants’ manager position. With 20 years of managing experience with four different teams, including the Oakland Athletics, Melvin has earned three Manager of the Year awards.
“I’m very excited, especially growing up as an A’s fan…talking to the other guys, we’re all really excited,” said Logan Webb, the Giants’ pitcher, in an interview with NBC Sports Bay Area’s Carlos Ramirez.
As Melvin takes on this new role, Giants fans are eager to see what he will bring to the team. With great experience and ties to the Bay Area, Melvin is sure to bring success to this beloved team.
