Many people have high hopes for Riordan’s boys’ wrestling team this year after an exciting 2022 season, where they won an intense dual against Sacred Heart Cathedral and made WCAL finals and state.
Having trained persistently since the start of the school year, they are ready to go up to the mat.
“We made a lot of improvements from last year and now we’re building from that. We have a lot of momentum,” said head coach Jack Schindler.
So far, they have dominated the mat with wins at the double duals against Lowell: 64 to 15, and George Washington: 68 to 6 in addition to multiple individual awards at the Colt Classic tournament.
To help them on their path to success, the boys wrestling team is equipped with new coaches, including Jose Aguilar ’23, former wrestler and Riordan alumnus. On top of that, the boys’ team numbers have grown from about 30 boys last year, to 62 this year.
Schindler added, “It’s one of the biggest teams I’ve coached in 13 years.”
The wrestling team trains very hard, as highlighted by senior Nicolas Galzote ‘24.
Galzote ’24 commented, “I assume most people really underestimate how we practice in this sport. The conditioning is tough. I can compare it to how the military trains.”
Upcoming duals and tournaments for Riordan’s boys wrestling team include: Pat Lovell, Mid Cals, and the WCAL. They will be attending a total of seven meets and duals this season.
