This past semester, the San Francisco Stories classes of Archbishop Riordan competed in a competition for a chance to go to the San Francisco Zoo. The competition consisted of each class naming as many streets in the “SF Streets Names” game.
Each week the class would have a five minute period to name streets and the class with the largest percentage of the city filled out won the field trip.
In April, Brian Kosewic’s sixth block class won the competition with around 72 percent of the city’s streets named. Michelle Chavero ’24 said, “We were all hyped since it would be a way for our class to bond together outside of block six. It also felt like a reward for our hard work for the whole semester.”
The class went to the zoo on May 8, heading down west on the 23 Muni bus towards Ocean Beach, excited to see the many unique animals and creatures that the zoo had to offer.
Max Reese ’24, a senior who will be studying zoology next fall, had some opinions on the current state of the SF Zoo, saying “I think that the current state of the zoo was good…They had some improvements from when I went a few years ago.”
Reese went on to note that there were some improvements that could be made. “There were a couple of closed exhibits like the petting zoo, and there were some empty spaces that could be filled with some new seating areas or new exhibits.”
Trips like this might appear more and more for students in the future, as Riordan looks for new fun ways to educate and teach students.
Kosewic ’16 said, “I think it was perfect for seniors right at the end of the semester so it was just kind of a fun and relaxing and lowkey outing… I definitely look forward to doing more field trips in the future!”
The zoo trip turned out to be a great experience for the students, and one that they can look back on fondly as a way to close out their senior year.
