The Ingleside library turns 15 this year!
Students may have seen this library when they go out for a walk down Ocean Avenue, but have not ventured inside. The construction of this library began in 2002 and it was finished after a long seven year process in 2009.
This library was created thanks to the persistent neighbors who pushed for a full-service library for decades. This was because as Riordan Librarian Daniel Appel said, “libraries are the cornerstones of the community and our culture” and there weren’t many libraries in the area.
People in the neighborhood wanted a place to meet new people and at the same time study or read.
Ingleside library has several different spaces that were created to make improvements over the time. It has a community room, a children’s reading room and an outdoor garden. Some people think that this library can improve by making the space for books bigger.
Having seen all the improvements they have done in the last couple of years like more public computers or self-checkout machines, patrons can tell that the library is involved in trying to make the facility better. Ingleside Library is a clear example of a dynamic library.
According to some boarding students, Ingleside Library and libraries in general should add a larger space for comics to attract teenagers and create a younger atmosphere.
Most of the time teenagers refuse to go to libraries because of the ambience. Something like a cafeteria with a variety of food would be a big improvement in order to make the library more comfortable.
Appel said, “I have been to Ingleside Library many times, it’s clean, well-organized, and well-staffed with a good selection.”
