Riordan kicked off its annual golf tournament Oct. 19 and raised an impressive $25,000, which will be put towards upgrades to the athletic facilities. The event, held at the Lake Merced Golf Club, brought together Riordan’s golf team, alumni, students and friends.

According to Paul Cronin ’93, Alumni Director and coordinator of the event, even with current circumstances, the event was successful. “We sold out and had 125 golfers attend,” he said. “I actually had an additional 40 people that I had to put on the waiting list! It really shows how badly alumni and friends of the community want to get out, breathe some fresh air and be together.”

Unlike previous years, golfers had to comply with COVID-19 safety protocols, including social distancing and wearing masks while in the golf cart. The only other difference was not being able to serve dinner in the building. Lunch was distributed to golfers during the tournament and they enjoyed a happy hour in the afternoon.

Another change was that Riordan’s golf team participated in the all-day event. According to Cronin, it was a huge hit.

“The boys got to meet alumni and friends, hit drives for them, and they raised some good money for Riordan,” he said.

Attendees commented that they enjoyed the event and liked that the venue was switched from Harding Park to Lake Merced Golf Club.

“Everyone was just really happy to be together and having a great time,” said Cronin. “Golf may be the only way we can get future.”

Golfers may not need to wait until a year from now. Because of the huge response, Cronin said Riordan may host another golf day in the coming months.
