I visited Palmetto Superfoods on a frigid winter’s afternoon seeking to bolster my immune system against the imminent cold season with an açai bowl.
Upon entering the shop, I was presented with a menu detailing the myriad of bases and toppings that can be combined to create a custom bowl of acai, with flamboyant names like Japan-Cali Matchacado and Passionate mango.
Although there are also pre-customized bowls on the menu, I created my combination with bases like spirulina, coconut, mango, matcha-cado, and of course, açaí. The bowl also came with unlimited toppings, so I ordered their house peanut butter, granola, mango, goji berries, mulberries, coconut flakes, and bee pollen.
The vibrant blue spirulina evoked warm Caribbean waters despite the deluge outside, allowing me to blissfully forget that I would have to brave it on my way out the door.
The açai base had pomegranate and raspberry notes, complemented by a subtle tartness. Matcha-cado was ultimately my favorite base, with the smooth texture of the avocado perfectly complementing the rich flavor of matcha.
In addition, I felt the toppings were perfectly paired with the bases—the crunchiness of the granola with the silkiness of the bases made for a delightful contrast. Likewise, the peanut butter elevated the flavor of the açaí and coconut bases.
While it is a bit pricey, running me fourteen dollars for a medium-sized bowl, I’d still wholeheartedly recommend Palmetto Superfoods. Thus, I give this a 9/10.
