Winter brings various sports at Riordan, including boys soccer, which has kicked off JV and Varsitys first season of seeking to compete in the WCAL. Currently in pre-season, the coaching staff of 12 members, led by Bill Chu, has recently determined the teams, and already begun to play games at both levels.

Despite challenges in previous years, the coaches and players alike believe this year offers an opportunity to redeem the soccer program and attract more of a fanbase. The JV team has been extremely successful in recent games, boasting a record of all wins and one tie thus far, while the Varsity has faced some difficulties, having lost two games and tied one.

Nonetheless, through focusing on community strengthening, and working to bring together the players unique capabilities and talents into a harmonious unit, the Coaches believe they can lead the teams to victory.

William Wolcott 23, a recent addition to the boys varsity team, stated, “Currently, we are working the most on communication, accountability and working together as a team.”

The JV team, on the other hand, seemed to instantly click, and with many club players participating, they have a skilled lineup; having already beat rival schools that we struggled with against in the past.

Javier Kinney, 25, said, “Our losses last year were due to a lack of communication and trust, however this year we have lots of brand new additions to the team and coaching staff, and we have been going to training separate from practice together and building a stronger relationship.”

By the season’s conclusion in January, the teams hope to hopefully these two teams representing Riordan will have not only had successfullysuccessly on the field, and improved their record from previous seasons, but also gained a stronger bond and created a sense of community off the field.
