Philz Coffee brews new beginning

In 2003, Philz Coffee started brewing its creations in the Mission District of San Francisco.

Since then, their success has continued to grow, with coffee shops expanding across Northern and Southern California, as well as implementing locations in Chicago.

What started as a small, family- run Bay Area coffee shop, has become an emerging franchise with hopes of eventually reaching customers all across the United States.

With several locations scattered throughout San Francisco, Philz has become a convenient stop for many locals looking for their daily caffeine fix.

The Ocean Avenue location, just a 10 minute walk from Archbishop Riordan High School, is a popular spot for students and staff to grab a coffee before or after school.

Whether customers order their signature Mint Mojito or stick to a simple cup of Philtered Soul, according to the Philz Coffee website, they have “built a loyal customer base through its… community-focused approach.”

Student Annelise Hall ’26 has been loyal to Philz Coffee, even ordering the same drink year after year.

Whether she’s there to do homework, hang out with friends, or enjoy a cup of coffee, she expressed, “It’s super convenient to school…and the perfect pit stop. It’s a great place to spendsome time before school or after to do some homework.”

Science Teacher Jack Reardon also visits often. “I have supported the business on a regular basis ever since I started working at Riordan, a little over three years ago,” said Reardon.

He added that Philz has become part of his once-a-week routine whenever he needs a quick pick me up.

For many students and staff, Philz has become more than just a coffee shop, but rather a familiar place to start or end the school day. But while it continues to be a local favorite, big changes are brewing for the company.

This past summer, Philz Coffee was sold to a private equity firm, Freeman Spogli & Co., for $145 million. The sale marked a major shift for the company, which had been independently owned for more than two decades.

While this could mean more stores, more jobs for others, and greater accessibility for coffee lovers across the country, some customers have mixed emotions about the change.

One Riordan parent shared, “I think it’s good that the business is growing, but when companies get bigger the quality often goes down.”

As the company continues to expand, there are growing concerns that Philz may lose its signature handcrafted flavor and small business charm that originally set it apart from larger and more popular coffee chains.

As Philz enters their next chapter, the business faces the challenge of expanding while staying true to its Bay Area roots. Some customers are excited to see Philz reach new areas, while others hope it doesn’t lose what makes it unique to the community.

Only time will tell if the company can balance its growth with the same personal touch that first made it a local favorite.

No matter what happens next, Philz Coffee’s journey from a single shop in San Francisco, California to a growing national brand shows just how far a local favorite can go.
