A golden, crispy snack with unique seasonings and cuts: French fries. French fries are enjoyed all over the world, whether it is as a snack or a meal. This snack can be found almost anywhere, including places like McDonald’s, Burger King, Shake Shack, and our school cafeteria.

Fries accompany meals such as hamburgers.

French fries were invented in the late 1600s in the Meuse Valley in Belgium. The reason for the invention of fries was to mimic fried fish when all they had were potatoes during a famine. The name “French Fries” came from the interaction between the American army and the Belgian army. The Belgian army spoke French, hence the Americans called them ‘French’ fries.

Today, there is a wide selection of fries such as curly fries, waffle fries, sweet potato fries, and many more. There are also different types of seasonings, such as garlic fries, cheese fries, chili fries, and loaded fries. There is a variant for everyone to enjoy.

In Riordan’s school cafeteria, there have been different types of fries this school year. They have served regular fries, curly fries, steak fries, and garlic fries.

According to one of the cafeteria workers, Tina, she says that the garlic fries and regular fries sell the best.

There are also fries from the grill located outside the theater. Féilim Roman ’28 prefers the fries from the grill. “They don’t taste like wet cardboard, and they are usually warm. They’re the right level of crispiness, too.”

Jaxon Pippin ’29 expressed his joy for fries as well. “I like fries a lot, especially with seasoning — garlic fries or spicy ones with chilies. The fries from the grill are 100 percent way better than the cafeteria fries. ”

Even though fries can be unhealthy when consumed too much, in moderation, it is a staple for many individuals, young or old.
