As many artists strive to be noticed, Shrey Purohit, an award winning artist and owner of the Ingleside Art gallery, has given a platform to both professional and amature artists.

After seeing Ingleside, Purohit realized how inattentive the neighborhood was according to The Ingleside Light, “great but hidden talents residing in the neighborhood” especially due to the pandemic.

Art teacher Irman Arcibal responded saying, “Art galleries are important because it is usually the first avenue to greater exposure, especially in person. Even if an artist gains popularity through social media and/or the internet, a gallery show is often the next step to capitalize on a growing and developing career.”

He added, “This may change and evolve as virtual art viewing, digital galleries, and NFTs increase in popularity, but it could also swing in the other direction. I personally would prefer to view an artwork in person before I thought of actually purchasing it, but who knows – physical artwork could disappear one day (gulp).”

Reese Lu ’24 said, “I think that art galleries are special because it is cool to see other people’s art process and their own representation of art.”

So, by showcasing more and more artists throughout Purohit’s pop ups, the artists of Ingleside have been able to show their artistic distinction.

Kianna Hwang ’24 said, “I will continue to do art because it is fun and I can do it in my free time, plus it let’s me be more creative.”

Purohit has been organizing multiple exhibitions located at his Art gallery on 1507 Ocean Ave. In the past, some of his shows have presented art styles ranging from abstract expressionist oil painters to sculptors to photographers. His most recent pop-ups were two shows on Feb. 4-6, the Ingleside Group Show, and Feb. 11 to 13, the Paint ‘n’ Sip. Nonetheless, thanks to art galleries like Purohits, artists are able to make their mark in this world.

In March, the gallery will feature a special exhibit, “Celebrating Women: Art show celebrating 30 women artists from across the Bay Area.” Ari Jaboneta ’23 is helping to curate the show.

“I am really excited to be co-curating my first show at Ingleside Gallery. The staff is so supportive and are helping me become a strong independent leader,” said Jaboneta.

“The women’s gallery is going to feature some amazing pieces by women in the Bay Area and performances by poets and singers. I am so excited for my friends, family, and classmates to see this gallery.”
