MUNI’s 29 Sunset bus route is one of San Francisco’s busiest, running all the way from the Presidio to Bayview via Park Merced. Every day it transports many people to where they need to go, including students who rely on it to get to school on time. Despite its convenience, it is overcrowded, delayed, and unreliable, according to frequent riders.

The 29 has been transporting passengers in San Francisco since the 1980s. It travels through many neighborhoods, past businesses, and schools, making it a key means to get to and from places for daily life activities. The route has been known for being crowded, especially during rush hour, and many students have to wait due to bus delays or the bus already being full of people.

The SF MTA is planning to overhaul the route, which includes removing stops. According to their website, “We now have new proposals to improve the 29 Sunset as part of the 29 Sunset Improvement Project – Phase Two.  These proposals are designed to achieve several goals: More reliable bus service, with fewer service gaps and pass ups,  shorter travel times, more well-furnished and visible bus stops, and improved traffic safety for everyone who travels on the corridor.”

Isabel Fonseca ’27 mentioned, “I think the Muni needs to understand that many students rely on public transportation due to numerous factors such as living in a single parent home and having limited to no car transportation in their family.”

Gracie Burke ’27 said, “If I could change one thing I would make it less crowded. Even when the bus does come, it’s almost always completely full.”

Mireya Johnson Corral ’27 said, “It has been almost always late because of the inaccurate schedule.”

In addition to revoking several stops to make the trip more efficient, MUNI plans to add bus shelters to some stops.

The 29 is more than just a bus route, it’s an essential part of daily life for many San Franciscans. It’s an affordable way to get around the city without putting another car on the road and burning gas. For students, it’s a lifeline, not only in order to get to school, but other places where they can enjoy the full city experience with friends.
